G foundation collection Tokyoでは、5月17日より、コレクション展・シュウゾウ・アヅチ・ガリバー Body Contract(肉体契約)を開催いたします。
本ファウンデーションは、シュウゾウ・アヅチ・ガリバー の最も重要な作品である、＜肉体契約＞を収蔵いたしました。
1973年より始められたこのプロジェクトは、作家の死後、自らの身体を80のパーツに分け、契約を交わした80名にそれぞれの部位の保管を委ねるという作品です。
プロジェクトの一環として、1984年には、かつての佐賀町エキジビットスペースにおいて、すでに契約を取り交わした39名の保管者と2名の執行役を招き、一夜の宴を持ちました。契約をした保管者には、寺山修司などの著名人も含まれました。
会合の終了後、使用された宴会のテーブルは、タバコの吸い殻、ワインの空き瓶、グラスやコーヒーカップなど、そのままの姿でのこされ、インスタレーション作品として公開されました。
本展では、そのインスタレーションを、細かい配置も含め、当時のままに再現いたします。
このインスタレーションは、佐賀町の後に、展示物の内容を編集した2つのバーションが展示されましたが、当ファウンデーションでは、オリジナルを収集するという方針を定め、作家に当時のアイテムの発掘、配置を含めた細かい再現を依頼、不足するものは再制作を行い、この度、＜肉体契約＞佐賀町バージョンという形で、みなさまにお見せすることができるようになりました。
スペースの都合から本展示では、当時のテーブルの一部を切り取るという形になっていますが、斬新な見せ方になっております。ぜひこれはお越しいただいて、見ていただきたく思います。テーブルに散らかった紙のボックスや資料、ワインやビールの瓶、当時の様子が臨場感をもって体感できる展示になっております。
また、5/17のオープニングレセプションでは、公開契約式を行います。本ファウンデーションの大石が、死後の肉体を保存する契約を作家と新たに結びます。公開にて契約書にサインいたします。その契約書をそのまま作品として、展示に加えさせていただきます。

また、同日から、当ファウンデーション含む国立市周辺の5つのギャラリーが主催するアートイベント「国立写真間」がスタートします。当方では、併設されるKKAOビューイングスペースにて「Watch(1966-67)」を展示します。
”Watch”は、アナログ時計を写した20分の映像作品で、作品中の時計と同じ時刻に(つまり一日2回だけ)、上映される作品です。ガリバー氏は当時、映画をつかった実験的な作品をいくつも残しており、本作品「Watch」は、2016年にテートモダンでのグループ展「in the shadow of Pop」にて展示されたほか、東京都写真美術館にも収蔵されております。毎日、午後4時8分35秒からの上映になります。
公開契約式について
オープニング日、5/17(日曜日)の午後3時より、＜肉体契約＞公開契約式を行います。
これは、本ファウンデーションの代表である大石が、作家と、あらたに肉体の保存の契約を結ぶというものになります。皆様のご覧いただいている前で、書類にサインし、契約が成立し、作品の一部となる様子を公開いたします。みなさまは、この契約が確かに行われたということの、証人になります。
ぜひ、歴史的な作品の証人として、ご参列いただけますと幸いです。
契約式は、5/17(土) 15:00〜になります。

作家について
1947年滋賀県大津市生まれ。 高校在学中の1964年からハプニングなどの芸術活動を始める。
立命館大学文学部哲学科在籍中にマルセル・デュシャンを知り、以後の活動に大きな影響を受ける。アーティスト集団「THE PLAY」への参加やフルクサスとの交流を経て、1990年代以降ヨーロッパを中心に作品を発表する。現在は東京を主な活動の拠点としている。
1973年、最も重要な作品のひとつである＜肉体契約＞に着手。自分の身体を80のパーツに分け、自分の死後、契約を交わした80名にそれぞれの部位の保管を委ねることとなる。
その他、身体のスケールや構造、人間の生物学的基盤(DNAなど)が示す象徴性について、パフォーマンス、彫刻、ドローイングなど様々な形態での作品を制作、発表し続けている。
主な個展として、「消息の将来」(BankART KAIKOおよびBankART Station、2022年)、「Suzo Azuchi Gulliverʼs Cinematic Illumination」(MOMA、2020年)、「シュウゾウ・アヅチ・ガリバー EX-SIGN」(滋賀県立近代美術館、2010年)など。
主なグループ展に、第12回恵比寿映像祭 「時間を想像する」(東京都写真美術館、2020年)、「On a bien accroché」 (Maison Grégoire、ベルギー)、「1968年 激動の時代の芸術」(千葉市美術館、2018年)、「エクスパンデッド・シネマ再考」(東京都写真美術館、2017年)、「IN THE SHADOW OF POP」(テート・モダン、ロンドン、2016年)などがある。

G foundation collection #004 Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver : Body contract
G foundation Tokyo is pleased to present the exhibition “Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver: Body Contract” starting from May 17.
The Foundation has acquired Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver’s most important work, “Body Contract”.
In this project, which began in 1973, the artist divided his body into 80 parts after his death and entrusted the custody of each part to 80 people who signed a contract with him.
As a part of the project, in 1984, he organized an one-night banquet at the Sagacho exibit space, inviting 39 custodians and 2 executors who had already signed a contract with the artist. Including such a notable custodian as Shuji Terayama.
After the night, the banquet table was exhibited as an installation work, with cigarette butts, empty wine bottles, glasses, coffee cups, and other items left as they were.
In this exhibition, the installation will be reproduced as it was in its original state, including its detailed arrangement.
After Sagacho, two versions of this installation were exhibited with edited contents, but the Foundation decided to collect the originals and asked the artist to find the items from that time and recreate them in detail, including their layout, and now present them to the public in the form of “The Body Contract: Sagacho Version”.
The boxes of paper, documents, wine and beer bottles, and other items scattered on the table give visitors a realistic sense of what was going on at the time of the exhibition.
We will also hold a public contracting ceremony at the opening reception on May 17.
Mr. Oishi of the Foundation will sign a new contract with the artist to preserve his body after his death. The contract will be signed in public. The paper will be added to the exhibition as a part of the art work.
On the same days, an art event “Kunitachi Shashin-kan,” will be held by five galleries around Kunitachi City.
The Foundation will exhibit “Watch (1966-67)”.
This is a 20-minute video work featuring a clock, which will be exhibited at the same time as the clock in the work (i.e., only twice a day).
This work, “Watch,” was shown in the group exhibition “in the shadow of Pop” at the Tate Modern in 2016, and is also in the collection of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.

About Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver
Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver stands out as a transformative figure in the contemporary art world, renowned for his diverse and impactful body of work that spans performance art, sculpture, drawing, and film. His innovative approach consistently challenges conventional perceptions, exploring deep themes of human existence, identity, and philosophical questions about life and death.
Born in 1947 in Shingu, Wakayama, Japan, Gulliver’s artistic path was shaped primarily by the influence of French artist Marcel Duchamp during his formative years. Duchamp’s groundbreaking ideas prompted Gulliver to question established artistic norms and delve into the unconventional, a hallmark that has characterized his career.
In the late 1960s, Gulliver became an active participant in the Japanese avant-garde art scene, joining the experimental artist collective “THE PLAY.” This group was known for its public happenings and interventions, which emphasized the ephemeral nature of art. These experiences honed Gulliver’s skills in collaborative and performative art and expanded his understanding of art as a social and philosophical tool.

A particularly striking piece by Gulliver is the conceptual project “Flesh Contract,” initiated in 1973. This work entails dividing his body into 80 parts with each part contractually assigned to different individuals posthumously. It challenges notions of body ownership and mortality, serving as an existential inquiry that prompts audiences to reconsider their views on mortality and physicality.
Gulliver’s innovative ventures into filmmaking further solidify his reputation as a multifaceted artist. A notable piece of his film work is “Cinematic Illumination (1968-69),” housed in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. This work exemplifies his creative use of film to expand visual and conceptual boundaries, offering transformative cinematic experiences through light, motion, and narrative.
Throughout his career, Gulliver has shown an unwavering dedication to probing the link between art and the human condition. His work serves as a mirror to society’s narratives and poses challenging questions about existence, inviting active audience engagement and blurring the line between observer and participant.
